EMP Biotech

Meeting Oligo Synthesis Demands with Increased Capacity and Tailored Packaging Solutions

To ensure continued supply security and accommodate global demand, emp Biotech (via its Campo Amargo subsidiary) recently opened a new 1,800 m² facility in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park. This site boosts production of oligonucleotide synthesis reagents used in DNA and RNA synthesis and adds capacity for future growth.

With this expansion, customers can count on the availability of high-quality oligonucleotide synthesis reagents at scale—delivered in formats that suit both research and production environments. Read more below for an overview of emp Biotech’s packaging options for oligonucleotide synthesis reagents.

In oligonucleotide synthesis, the way reagents need to be packaged for efficiency, scalability, while maintaining product integrity (e..g. low moisture content). To support a wide range of workflows—from benchtop development to industrial production—emp Biotech offers packaging options that combine technical quality with practical design. This article gives an overview of available formats and highlights recent production capacity expansions.

Glass Bottles for Lab-Scale Applications

emp Biotech supplies amber glass bottles in sizes and thread types tailored for lab compatibility:

  • 100 mL – 20 mm crimp/septum
  • 450 mL – 28-400 thread
  • 1 L, 2.5 L, 4 L – GL45 thread
  • 4 L – 38-430 thread (US standard)

These bottles are ideal for small-scale automated systems. Amber glass protects light-sensitive oligonucleotide synthesis reagents, and the different closure types allow integration with a variety of lab hardware.

Stainless Steel Drums for Large-Scale Use

For larger reagent volumes, emp Biotech offers high-purity AISI 316L stainless steel drums in sizes from 20 L to 1,400 L. Features include:

  • UN 1A1W/X2.0/900 certification for both corrosive and non-corrosive reagents
  • PTFE-sealed Tri-Sure closures
  • Operating pressure up to 2.0 bar
  • Inlet/outlet systems with Type M (nitrogen) and Type K (liquid) connectors

These containers are particularly well-suited for GMP-compliant environments and high-throughput workflows where chemical resistance and operator safety are critical.

Tailored Withdrawal Systems

To fit the requirements of different laboratories and production sites, emp Biotech provides a complete range of withdrawal systems designed to ensure clean, controlled reagent dispensing:

  • Drum Dispensing Head Units (DDHU) with PTFE O-rings
  • Extraction tubes matched to specific drum volumes
  • Inlet/outlet systems for pressure-assisted solvent handling

These systems support precise, safe solvent transfer, reducing exposure and simplifying integration into automated processes.
